In the shadow of loss - an immersive installation based on personal experiences of loss. Using a variety of materials – including organza, gauze, tulle, pins, dust and paint. I created amorphous sculptures to communicate impermanence and fragility of existence. The delicacy of the knitted organza and the tulle are contrasted by the heaviness of the gauze and used as a way to communicate binaries and opposing ideas. The gauze and pins, on the other hand, could be referenced as mending or healing or perhaps interpreted as pain. I have also used dust (lint) to represent traces of our mortality. The material is transient and can be held together, but only temporarily, this is what occurs to our dying bodies, it holds together for a period, but eventually, we return to dust. The transitory nature of life. The installations deliberately combine materials that have a tactile presence—ones that are vulnerable and impermanent suggesting the push and pull between loss, resilience and restoration. The shadow referred to in the title is a metaphor for the darkness that occurs from misplacement and absence. Metaphorically, it symbolizes the spaces between reality and abstraction; presence and absence and, potently, communicates aspects of light and perspective. In between light and dark, shadows help express something by revealing its opposite.
